"Close to the Sun" & "The Watchers"
2021-07-18 15:29

This week we will show two international award-winning Chinese films: Close to the Sun and The Watchers.

Close to The Sun

Close to The Sun tells a story of a French artist questing for her own Shangri-la to spend the rest of her life after being diagnosed with an incurable disease. She ended up in a paradise-like village, Danzhai and fell in love with the life of the local Miaos. All the shooting of the film was completed in Guizhou province.

What is presented on the screen is a heart-warming relationship between the eastern and western cultures and a trembling poetic dialogue. With the combination of natural scenery, ethnics and cultural heritages in Guizhou, the film earned itself fame on the international stage and walked home with three awards at the 17th Sedona Film Festival, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography in the United States.

The Watchers

The Watchers is adapted from the reportage of the same name by Dang Yimin. It tells the story of an ordinary PLA soldier Chen Yuzhu who sacrificed to construct the Tianshan Highway in Xinjiang for 25 years. The film won the Golden Angel Award at the 7th Chinese American Film Festival.
