On 3 April 2025, ahead of China's Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day), Ambassador Xiao Junzheng visited the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery in Tel Aviv to pay tribute to the resting internationalist fighter Jakob Rosenfeld. Defense Attaché Xu Xiaogang and young diplomats from the Chinese Embassy attended the memorial ceremony.
On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Israel, Ambassador Xiao, together with other diplomats, laid a wreath at Rosenfeld's gravesite, observed a moment of silence, and bowed in tribute to the revolutionary martyr.
By delivering a memorial oration, Ambassador Xiao recounted Rosenfeld's life and deeds, profoundly honoring his significant contributions to the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, and lauding his lofty internationalist spirit.
It was stated by the attendees that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. They highlighted how Rosenfeld leveraged his exceptional medical expertise to support the Chinese people in fighting against Japanese fascists' aggression—a commitment parallel to how the Chinese people extended assistance to Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi Holocaust. Both actions stand as vivid embodiments of the enduring Chinese-Jewish friendship. After revisiting these memorable historical events, the participants expressed a heightened sense of responsibility to promote the sound and stable development of China-Israel relations.
Dr. Jakob Rosenfeld (1903-1952), a Jewish Austrian who held a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Vienna, fled Nazi persecution in the summer of 1939 and went into exile in Shanghai. He subsequently joined the anti-Japanese forces led by the Communist Party of China, serving critical medical roles in the New Fourth Army, the Eighth Route Army, and the Liberation Army. After returning to Austria in November 1949, he visited relatives in Israel where he passed away in Tel Aviv on 22 April 1952.
